Rose is a beautiful mare who was rescued by CHPA in July 2022. Inspector Melony found Rose in a state of immense pain and distress, forced to work despite her lameness and deplorable condition.
What CHPA did not know at the time was that Rose was pregnant. She kept her secret until a month before she gave birth, when her belly started to show. On 28 February 2023, dearest Rose, a courageous mare who had endured unimaginable hardships, gave birth to a beautiful foal. We named her Shilo, meaning “gift from God” and “peaceful one”.
Rose and Shilo are now living happily at the R&R, where they receive all the love, care, nourishment, vet care and attention they so rightfully deserve. Rose is a very good and protective mother to her daughter, who is growing fast and exploring her surroundings.
In the midst of Rose and Shilo’s journey, we must not forget Miss Scheepers, a protector and caretaker who never left Rose’s side. Miss Scheepers, herself rescued from an overloaded cart while heavily pregnant, gave birth to her own foal named Jasmine. Together, these remarkable mothers and their offspring remind us of the resilience and strength that can emerge from even the darkest of circumstances.
Together, let us continue to provide hope, healing and a brighter future for Rose and Shiloh and all the horses who rely on our support at the Recovery and Rehabilitation Centre in Gordon’s Bay.
