In 1995 the Cart Horse Protection Association came into being, but it was another thirteen years before we finally had a place where we could take neglected and abused horses. Up until the late Bertha van Vliet left us a large sum of money in her will, with which we were able to purchase a piece of land, we had to rely on other organisations such as the Cape of Good Hope SPCA when we had to confiscate horses.
So in 2008 we moved into the Firlands Equestrian Estate in Gordon’s Bay. Since then, 345 horses have called the R&R home and 31 foals have been born there. 101 horses have been adopted out over the last 13 years from there, although not all adoptions have turned into forever homes for the horses. In addition to Carmen, who oversees the R&R in her capacity as the Adoptions and Stable Yard co-ordinator, there are 5 grooms, each looking after 8 horses; Rhyno, Emmanuel, Donnex, George and Herbert.
While some horses only spend a few weeks at the R&R, others are there for years before they finally find their forever homes. To make sure that they are best prepared for their new lives, we have Alan Lockwood who works with them.
We need to raise R300 000 to ensure the best care for these 33 horses over the next year.
