NEW SHOES EVERY TWO WEEKS

As any good farrier and horseman will know, there is no truer saying than: “No hoof, no horse.” If a horse’s feet are not properly taken care of, it will eventually affect other parts of their body too. Working cart horses travel up to 80kms per day, every day, day, after day, after day. They run straight through a set of shoes in the space of two weeks.

WHAT WE DO

The Cart Horse Protection Association (CHPA) has a qualified farrier and two apprentices that shoe horses at the clinic in Epping. In the afternoons they also run mobile clinics and go out to places that are too far away for horses to be brought into the clinic.

In addition, the carties receive education on the care of their horses in general, and their feet and harnesses in particular. We subsidise the shoes and farriery services they receive from CHPA to encourage horses to be brought in to us, rather than being shod at home by someone without the necessary knowledge.

Other services offered by us include subsidised feed, harness and cart repair services at our weekly clinics and 24/7 veterinary care. We monitor them whilst they work on our roads and respond to complaints. Our Recovery & Rehabilitation Centre provides a place of safety from abuse and neglect.

SO, WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Become part of the “Shoeing for Good” campaign. We challenge you to please donate R250 towards a set of shoes for a very deserving working cart horse.
