Over the past 20 years the number of horses in industry has decreased. However outside influences such as shortage of scrap metal, lack of open areas to keep horses and increased traffic on the road prompted us to not look for alternative income generation but rather to work towards reducing the number of horses in the industry.
- Workshops will focus on uncontrolled breeding, we will encourage owners to geld their young colts and start offering a free contraception service for mares.
- Close busy roads such as Koeberg, Voortrekker and Main Roads to cart horses. This is a huge project requiring input from a number of City departments.
- The closing of registrations – if cart horse owners wish to register a new horse, it must come from within the industry. This will also create a market for owners in the industry wanting to sell their horses.
