  2. Andrea says:

    Hi Marlene
Animal Anti-Cruelty and the SPCA both offer Inspectorate Training. To do this training though you need to already be involved in an animal welfare organisation. Please let me know if you require any more information.

    Hi Natasha

Thank you for your concern. In many ways I feel the same way, but we need to also look at it from the cart horse owners’ and drivers’ perspective. Using horses to pull carts is not a new thing, it has been done for centuries. The only thing that has changed is that they are now collecting scrap metal as opposed to fruit and vegetables, and the roads have become tar roads filled with cars! The carts that are used are most definitely all proper carts constructed for its purpose. CHPA does not allow the owners to use any other form of cart. We have a cart making workshop on our premises which is run by one of the cart horse owners. Here, carts are repaired and made to order.

Most of these men have absolutely no other means of generating an income for themselves and pulling carts has been in their family for generations. From their view, who are we to tell them they are no longer allowed to do this? The majority of the cart horse owners are good owners who care for their horses and bring them in frequently for new shoes and checkups, the problem comes in when they are not making enough money to feed themselves and their families – and this in turn negatively affects the horse. I don’t think anybody can really argue that if your family and horse are both starving, you are going to try and feed your family first.

The sad reality is that by taking away their horse, you are taking away their ability to survive. Cart Horse Protection Association is not here to confiscate horses from members of the public, we are here to ensure these horses are not abused or neglected. CHPA will do everything in its power to assist members of the community, and we will step in to help when we know the owner is fair and does truly want to take care of his horse. We will only confiscate a horse if there is severe neglect or abuse and can see the owner is completely unwilling to change his ways & does not care for his horse at all.
I hope this helps to ease your concerns.

    Regards
    Andrea

    Hello Andrea,

I would like to become more involved, what options are available? I would really like to work with the horses itself?

    Thanks
    Melissa

  6. Megan says:

    Hi Melissa

On our How can u help page – you will see an option for volunteering. Please fill out the Volunteer Form and send back to us and we will see where we can accommodate you. Volunteering with the horses is very dependent on a number of factors, such as time available, if you have transport etc… so please fill that in and we will be in touch.

    Regards
    Megan

    Hello Andrea,
It was good to look on your web site and see exactly how you help these horses.
My daughter was in traffic in Cape Town and saw a horse been beaten by two youths but didnt have a number to call. I have given her your number and also put it onto my phone. Is it not possible for these carts to have some sort of registration number so that it can be written down and reported afterwards (this was my husbands idea) I would really like to visit your facilities and will make donations now that I know your details.

    Regards, Noleen
