Diana Truter
Veterinary & Rehabilitation Unit
To our Snr. Inspector Diana Truter the issue that matters most is the belief that ALL cart horses have the right to proper care, respect and dignity (and these three in equal measure). Her work ethic grants us all the opportunity to view the depths of her beliefs. Her priorities are built upon the foundation of her veterinary experience. The past 9 years has granted Diana a wound care wisdom cultivated by treating a wide spectrum of cart horse injuries. For 3288 days she has seen cart horses come and go, developing a keen eye for condition and lameness.
The carting industry has come to know her as a straight talking defender of the rights of these working equines. The “cartie” workshops she initiated during 2009 are well attended and is geared to imparting the combined veterinary and farrier knowledge of all 3 inspectors and both farriers in a way that will ensure practical application.
Diana resides at the CHPA Rest & Rehabilitation Centre located at Firlands Park. Together with the grooms, Bolo & Wilson, she ensures the smooth running of the stable yard.
In the mornings Diana arrives “over the air waves” as she issues instructions to the “carties” and cart horses over her bakkies’ mounted speaker while passing them, who themselves are en route to our morning static clinic. In the afternoons she leaves with Chris de Burgh blaring out of the bakkie windows.
It is clear to us as her colleagues that she devotes the greatest part of her daily life to the cart horses and to Cart Horse. (Sleep-overs at our EppingII clinic site to treat a cart horse with colic is unfortunately not uncommon). This commitment is duly called love. A love fueled by her respect for the life, dignity and well-being of CHPA’s most valued mandate, the working cart horses.
Daily these horses and donkeys serve us as humanity by pulling scrap and vegetable carts for those members of our society that are less fortunate than ourselves. Your kind donation is viewed as you expressing your commitment to and love for these truly deserving “horsey” friends of OUR Snr. Inspector Diana Truter.

Ashley Deelman
Farrier
Ashley Deelman is now an old hand at CHPA. With his ILPH Farriery training, Small business skills certificate, driving license and quiet manner, he has developed into a strong, capable and valuable asset to the organisation. The field relies on Ashley to not only manage the Farrier workshop and give daily training to the apprentice Farrier, but to hold the fort when the going gets tough or the unexpected happens. Many a time Ashley has come up with a quick solution to a problem, or a hand to catch an amorous stallion on the loose. Ashley has also started to develop his own clients outside of CHPA and is very proud to say that he has taken advantage of every opportunity that’s come his way. With a beautiful wife and three? children, Ashley is now a highly respected member of his community and spends much of his spare time helping people in need and working with his local church.
Carl Naudé
Reception & Administration
Carls Naudé seven year history in medical logistics enabled him to relocate from Kimberley to Cape Town in 1999. After various employment opportunities, he finally settled in the medical debt recovery industry. Four years later he decided again to challenge himself by shifting out of his comfort zone and taking up employment with CHPA. Carl contributes to the office functions and acts as a support for the various administrative tasks relevant to the cart horse industry. His is the voice that greets callers contacting the Epping offices. His personal additional mission statement is “Emancipating the Unicorn in all Cape cart horses”. Carl only joined us at the end of 2007 but has already made his mark through his dedication and ability to fit in. Suddenly the office is running on full steam ahead and everyone is very happy knowing that Carl is the lynch pin of solidity when at times all around is chaos.

Karin Bothma
Patrol & Call-Out Response Unit
Karin Bothma embodies the energy and drive prevailing at CHPA.
Like many of the cart horses, Karin too is known by numerous aliases: “KB”,“Gawie”,“Kleintjie” and “Ma-Grrrr”.
Her priorities at CHPA include patrolling (we prefer using the term patrolling to police-ing) the Cape Town Metropol roads and streets, employing many “avenues” so as to find those “carties” that are reported to us by you as the cart horse caring public, as abusing their horses.
Karin lives with her three dogs, Delfie (rescued from Delft), Gizmo (rescued in Mandalay) and Mission (rescued from Mission Station). She believes that care and compassion are as important as veterinary care, and she lives out this ethic as a cornerstone to all she does at CHPA. Injured cart horses receive the same concern as us, her colleagues. Experiencing life as a cart horse or as a human makes no difference to her. BOTH DESERVE HER RESPECT AND ATTENTION!
Amongst the “carties” she is known to be both caring and optimistic. “Everything is possible if one takes the time and displays the will to achieve the goal”. This attitude strengthens her resolve. However, beware the one who shows no care and love for their hard working cart equines! She speaks once. Either you listen and do, or she will do what is necessary to ensure the protection of these majestic animals.
As donors and supporters, you too can assist Karin by reporting all seen cases of cart horses being abused, being under condition or out on the roads lame. You are urged to call her on 082 6 566 599 to obtain more information as to what to look out for when driving past a horse and cart.
Your kind donation will help fuel the bakkie and the potential of our Patrol & Call-Out Department, as well as help “fuel” the passion and “drive” of our Inspector Karin Bothma.

I just wanted to commend you guys on the excellent work that you do for these cart horses and there owners, I have been riding and looking after horses for 17 years and its great to hear of places like yours that have the same passion for horses that I do. I often see cart horses in the area that I live that are in such poor condition and pulling extremely heavy loads and there hooves look like they have not seen a farrier in decades…. have called the police a few times in severe cases but they just give a warning and send the guys on there way even though the horse is clearly in distress and extreme discomfort most of the time, its very disheartening and extremely sad as they wouldnt allow a human to suffer like that but yet they allow it to happen to horses that cannot even defend themselves… I now have your contact details and will rather report any cruelty that I encounter to you.
I just reported a horse today. This guy was stealing batteries in koeberg road, and he was hitting that horse so hard just to get away from the security that was chasing him. People like that shouldnt even be on the road, they should be in jail.
I live on the cape flats and and all animals are very close to my heart. Our dogs on the flats I cant save, as there are just too much, but the work you guys do to help these horses really has touched me deeply. There is not a single evening when I drive home that I do not encounter a cartie, and I really try hard not to look, at a point where I need blinkers, just to avoid seeing an overloaded cartie or a horse in pain. I have your number now and will make use of it in future. I’ve never been close to a horse or touched one, but they are the most majestic animals I’ve ever seen, and hopefully one day I’ll have the courage to come CHPA to experience it.
I would like to compliment Karin on the professional manner in which she promptly responded to my call regarding a carthorse being severely flogged by it’s driver in Halt Road yesterday afternoon. Her dedication was clearly evident in the efficient manner in which she addressed the problem. Once again many thanks for the excellent service that your organisation provides!
Kind regards
